TBO.com has reported that the governor of Kall-leaf-own-ya has just vetoed another gay marriage bill. He keeps offering the same reasons, which come down to a question of voting venue, rather than more immediately ethical or political considerations.
It reads:
"Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed another gay marriage bill Friday, saying voters and the state Supreme Court, not lawmakers, should decide the issue. The Republican governor turned down a measure by Assemblyman Mark Leno that would have defined marriage as a union between two people, not just a man and a woman. Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill from Leno, a San Francisco Democrat, in 2005 and has said he would veto all such bills."
I think the governor has the right sensibility about the issue, meaning he is just as repulsed by twisted "preferences" as the next guy, but he does not want to square off on the subject and say what he really thinks about the issue itself, rather than its proper procedural handling. He knows as well as we do that his manly-man orientation would get him into a good deal of trouble with a certain political constituency exercising significant influence in his state.
The Sodomites already have too strong a political foothold for him to tackle the question directly. In such a sad-but-true environment, he would rather redirect the issue to one of procedure. But is there anyone who doesn't know what he is actually doing?
He is ducking the real -- or at least more substantial -- issues. But they'll be BAHCK. Still, I like his direction on this topic. And at least he is consistent. You could do worse.
